2017  US  NATIONAL  HYDROFLIGHT  TOUR  COMPETITION  RULES

REGISTRATION:

  • Participants must fill out the online registration form. 

VIDEO PRE-SELECTION (IF NEEDED):

  • A video is required for new pro flyers, former competitors are exempt from sending a pre-qualifying video, as their previous ranking allows them to enter the competition without it. 
  • In the event that participants needs to submit a video resume, Pro Watercross will contact you immediatley. 
  • The video will be assessed upon receipt by the panel of judges and the participant will be informed if they have qualified or if they are on waiting list depending on the quality of the maneuvers performed.

RULES FOR VIDEO SUBMISSIONS:

  • One video only per participant (if needed).
  • Video should last 2 minutes maximum and be filmed in one sequence shot (no cut or editing allowed)
  • We recommend you make a video that includes all of the qualifying round maneuvers. Rotations, spins and Superman's. do your best to show your range.
  • Judges know you have many chances to capture your best 2-minute video.

PARTICIPANTS:

  • Up to 50 maximum athletes compete for Pro, after qualifying round only 16 athletes will be guaranteed points in the Pro division.  Please Note: Athletes who wish to have Pro status, must be pre-approval by Pro Watercross' managing director - Jason Burns
  • 10 (maximum) JetPack, 10 (maximum) Veterans, 10 (maximum) Ladies 10 (maximum) Youth divisions will take part in the competition. If Interest increase in these categories we will reassess these formats.
  • Veteran category is for 40+ years or disabled (upon jury’s decision). Masters is for 30-40 years.
  • Anyone under the age of 18 must provide Pro Watercross with a copy of their birth certificate and have parent or legal guardian approval.

  • Pro Watercross may allow an extra 5 riders to join the competition upon jury’s decision.
  • The event organizer reserves the right to reject the application of anyone who would be harmful to the image of Pro Watercross and / or anyone who would damage the spirit of the competition.
  • All competitiors and crew must abide by the Pro Watercross Code of Conduct

COMPETITION AREA:

  • The competition area will be in a square of 100 by 50 meters (328 by 164 ft) lined by buoys every 50 meters. This means there will be three buoys on the front side, we will have officials monitoring the line.

SCORING SYSTEM

  • Athletes will be judged by a jury of 5 professionals. Each will be overall impression judges with an emphasis on their category. Two technical judges, one energy judge, one Showmanship judge and one diversity judge.
  • Technicity (figures execution, difficulty of figures and innovation) – 2 judges
  • Variety/diversity of figures – 1 judge
  • Showmanship: presence, facial expression, interaction with the audience, coherence of the run (flow with an escalating difficulty and a grand finale) – 1 judge
  • Energy (vibe, number of figures, execution speed, execution rhythm) – 1 judge
  • Each judge will vote for the best athlete within their criteria, the winner will be the athlete that gets the most votes.

Qualifying round:

  • Athletes will run individually in front of the jury where they will have to perform 3 different tricks in a time limit of 1 min 30 seconds. The athlete has up to 10 seconds to test equipment before their qualifying run begins. No tricks during this test period.
  • The run needs to begin with 3 compulsory stand alone maneuvers, they can be done in any order.
  • If you fail to execute a compulsory move you will not receive points.
  • If you forget to do one of your compulsory maneuvers it will result in an overall deduction on your score.
  • The judges will score each athlete on a ten-point scale which results in a global grade on 50 points.
  • The final mark (minus penalties) will rank athletes for the next stage.
  • It is strongly recommended that you execute all compulsory maneuvers clean, the scoring emphasis on that is important.

Three compulsory moves BOARD:

  • Spin: not limited to any number of spins and will be performed on the rise. (no spinning dives)
  • Superman: needs to be horizontal or inverted to receive full points (Drop supermans will be allowed) anything less than horizontal will receive deductions.
  • Rotation: not limited to any number of flips or the direction of the flip. E.g. Triple, quad, front, side etc... should be landed clean and above the water to receive full points. (Drop doubles/triples will be allowed)

Three compulsory moves JETPACK:

  • Spin or corkscrews: not limited to any number of spins and will be performed on the rise.
  • Backward flying: limited to one up down motion.
  • Rollercoaster: Unlimited

Three compulsory moves YOUTH & NOVICE DIVISION:

  • Spin: not limited to any number of spins and will be performed on the rise. (no spinning dives)
  • Superman: needs to be horizontal or inverted to receive full points (Drop supermans will be allowed) anything less than horizontal will receive deductions.

These standalone tricks will give judges a chance to accurately judge each rider's' technical ability.


The remainder of the run will be freestyle, not limited to any number of tricks/combinations. Diversity will be a factor in scores, e.g. Including Dive variations, slaloms and new tricks etc. A standalone trick or combination that is repeated, will not score as high as the first time it was performed.


NIGHT FLIGHT COMPETITION: This is a competition looking for the best night time entertainment value (Flow and Show)

  • Competition is open to all Pro competitors and Masters competitors upon approval.
  • Individual competitors will compete starting at dusk and can use a song of their choice.
  • Bb talks will be accepted and can be used to communicate with a team manager or the crowd.
  • Both boards and jet packs can compete together.
  • Life jacket, helmets and ear protection are mandatory.
  • Competitors will be allowed to use "approved" props for added display.
  • No fireworks will be allowed at this time.  
  • Competitors will be not be allowed to fly over any ski on the water.
  • Out of bounds for one athlete is out of bounds for both.
  • Flipped ski rules will apply to both athletes even if only one flips.

NightFlight will be judged on a score of 1 to 10 and the criteria is as follows:

  • Style
  • Diversity
  • Execution
  • Showmanship
  • Cooperation
  • Use of the course
  • Innovation
  • Crowd interaction

It's important to understand that dangerous tricks will not be appreciated at night. We want flow and show. It's all about the overall entertainment value, not the amount of lights used.


FLIPPED WATERCRAFT RULE:

  • If an athlete flips the watercraft 90 degrees and the watercraft rights itself, they will receive a deduction for poor hose management and be allowed to continue.
  • If an athlete flips the Watercraft 180 degrees and the entire bottom can be seen, the run will be stopped for extremely poor hose management and severe deductions will be assessed on the entire run.

OUT OF BOUNDS RULE:

  • If an athlete flies out of bounds, they will receive a warning and a yellow flag.
  • If both the athlete and watercraft are out of bounds for more than 3 to 5 seconds without making an effort to get back inside the course, they will receive a Red flag, the run will be finished and deductions will occur.
  • If the athlete goes out of bounds a second time, there will be a Red Flag and the run will be finished and deductions will occur.
  • If a trick starts inside the zone but finishes outside the zone, it counts. If it starts outside, it doesn’t count

SPORTSMANSHIP AND SAFETY RULES:

  • EMK Requirments and Limits
    • EMK is required for Pro Men, Pro Women and Masters Divisions; athletes must have committee approval to qualify for these classes.
    • EMK is optional in Pro-Am, Vet, Jetpack and NightFlight. All new athletes will need to provide information verifying EMK experience. 
    • No EMK for Novice unless certified by a Flyboard Instructor or has a U.S. Captain license.
    • No EMK for Junior Divisions, pilot/driver must be the parent, guardian or approved coach.
  • If an athlete intentionally flies out of bounds into shallow areas or any other unprofessional behavior, there will be a Black Flag and they will be subject to disqualification from the tournament, as well as future competitions. (see athlete's code of conduct) This will be up to the discretion of the judges and promoters.
  • Getting too close to the hose on tricks like "Thread the Needle" will result in a deduction.
  • Touching the hose on any maneuver, will result in a severe deduction. This includes but is not limited to flips.
  • Athletes are not permitted to fly over the watercraft; doing so you risk deductions and possible disqualification if deemed intentional.
  • Mandatory ear protection will be implemented.
  • We have a helmet rule with a grandfather clause, all newcomers will wear a helmet and we strongly recommend everyone wear a helmet. If you have competed in the past without a helmet you may continue to do so at your own risk. This must first be cleared with your head judge.  All youth division participants must wear helmets regardless of past experience.
  • All YOUTH/JUNIOR competitors must wear a Personal Flotation Devise (PFD) rated at a minimum of 100 pounds of more.

PROTEST:

  • Only the athletes are allowed to protest.
  • Athletes that have a protest, please approach the Beach Manager or other designated person with the exact rule you are protesting. The Beach Manager or other designated person will present the protest to the judges and the appropriate time.
  • Judges are not to be disturb during competition.
  • A run that has been reviewed once, will not be subject to a second review.

GENERAL FORMAT:

  • Qualification for positions in battle rounds.
  • Dual elimination battle rounds for Pro classes #tbd
  • Battle groups are created as follows:
  • the athlete with the highest score will compete against the athlete with the lowest score and so on.
  • Athletes will run individually in front of the jury where they will perform a freestyle run within a given time limit.
  • If the athlete falls during his run due to a genuine failure of the equipment, the time will stop and the athlete will not be penalized. However, if the athlete falls due to a pilot error, the athlete will not recover the lost time.
  • All runs will start with a green flag and audible signal. You will receive a 20 second warning to the end of your routine with a red and green flag crossed and an audible signal. When a run is completed the athlete will receive an audible sound and a red flag.
